Santos legends 4 Santos Current squad 2
In a classic of a game Santos legends showed they had lost none of their skills nor love for the Candystripes with a devastating display. In a team spanning 40 years the Legends raced into a 2-0 lead when Gilbride caught Henry as he raced clear and the 1972 striker stroked home the pen. Then in a blistering ten mins the legends hit the post before Chris Scott of the 1972 vintage squad volleyed home a superb 25yarder which hurtled to the net. The current Santos were playing great one touch football but Paddy Mc Cormack in goals for the Legends was in superb form ,though the lack of shooting while in great positions allowed a sterling Legends defence to hold out. As half time approached Brian “Sligo” Kinsella smashed home a rasping shot to leave Mc Cormack helpless and then a disaster as Legends skipper Marty Robinson put past his helpless keeper to square the game. But just on the stroke of half time from veteran Mc Geehan’s superb pass Gerry Henry blasted home another great goal to show the striker has lost none of his predatory instincts.
Ht saw the legends lead
3-2.
The second have was as blistering as the first with each side breaking and threatening.
With manager Mc Geehan now starring for the current side ,having changed allegiance at h time, it looked only a matter of time before the young Santos scored. But a combination of the post (3 times), the crossbar (twice) and the magnificent Mc Cormack in goals frustrated the youngsters . And so the inevitable happened . . In a lightening break Gerry Henry raced through to complete a splendid hat trick. Then Kieran Megraw hit the post which would have clinched an ever more impressive victory before the full time whistle signalled the end of a great game.
This ,the first in a series of get togethers to celebrate Santos’ 40 years in existence was a huge success. The teams adjourned to the Pavilion after to continue the reminisinces and end a most memorable and emotional evening
